5 reasons to make the South Pacific your next cruise destination

Cook Islands adventure cruising and discounted cruise fares

When artist Paul Gauguin arrived in Tahiti, he captured the charm, culture and languid grace of the native inhabitants in his oil paintings. NEI offers four fully-inclusive cruises aboard luxury small-ship cruise lines to the South Pacific so that you can experience first hand the sights, sounds and smells that so inspired Gauguin. Here we offer 5 reasons to make the South Pacific your next cruise destination.

Snorkelling and SCUBA diving
Turtles, hundreds of different species of brilliantly colored tropical fish and uniquely shaped coral reefs…snorkelling and SCUBA diving in the South Pacific allows you to enter a mysterious and beautiful underwater world. If you prefer not to snorkel but still want to learn about marine wildlife, you have the option of spending a day on a glass bottom boat or a day with a marine biologist viewing and learning about dolphins during our Tahiti and Society Islands cruise.

Beaches
Matira Beach on Bora Bora is one of the best beaches in the world – and don’t just take our word for it. CNN Travel awarded Matira Beach the number 1 spot out of the 50 best beaches in the world and always tops the list of places to visit while on Bora Bora. And exclusive to NEI and partner cruise line Paul Gauguin is a day on Motu Mahana. This tiny islet adjacent to Taha’a features white sand beaches and gently swaying palm trees – a true paradise.

Land Safari Tours
An optional soft adventure during your South Pacific cruise is a 4×4 land safari. There are very few inland roads on Bora Bora, most were cut by the US military during WWII to enable the placement of canons on strategic look-out points. Traveling these roads from the comfort of a specially designed and air conditioned Land Rover, you will drive through the small town of Vaitape on the shore of Pofai Bay, then ascend Pahonu Hill. Here, you will find expansive views of Bora Bora’s natural harbor and Matira Beach. You will then continue on for a second ascent, more off-road adventure and see cannons standing in their original World War II locations. Spectacular views and photo ops are the highlight of this adventure.

Food
Sweet pineapple, tender coconut or fragrant vanilla – the South Pacific Islands are renowned for their tropical flavors. Each day you can sample the freshest ocean fish that French Polynesia offers, with tuna, mahi-mahi and grouper being on nearly every menu. Feeling adventurous? Try parrotfish, barracuda, octopus and sea urchin from the deep sea. Poisson cru – raw fish and diced vegetables soaked in coconut milk and marinated with lime juice – is a must try when you are visiting Tahiti.

Archeological wonders
While visiting Raiatea on our Tahiti and Society Islands cruise, you will have an entire day to explore this significant archeological site. Ancient Polynesians built maraes, which provided a physical space for the spirit of the gods to occupy during ritual ceremonies. Be sure to visit Taputapuatea, a national monument and the most important marae in the Society Islands.

What NEI’s past travelers say about visiting the South Pacific

“I’m already planning my next cruise!”
I’ve always received 5 star service with NEI. The South Pacific cruise in particular was one of my favorites. I liked the two private islands that were included in the itinerary—they alone are reason to go back. The beaches and snorkelling were absolutely amazing. I also liked that it was such a small ship because we really got to know each other. The all-inclusive cocktails definitely fuelled a lot of socializing! I’m already thinking about planning another cruise back to the South Pacific but it would need to be one of the longer itineraries since I’ll never want to leave! Judy Tower, Bend, Oregon / Hollywood, Florida

“We loved the upgrade to a balcony room!
We had a really great time and Mike wrote the Captain a lovely letter on board ship commenting on specific personnel who were very special. It was all very positive from us and they even upgraded us to a balcony room on the 7th deck for 5 days! You guys did a great job. Deborah Otto (Portola Valley, CA) and Michael Reed (Marietta, GA)
